Storytime!
I was getting dressed to go out with my boo-thang (A.K.A. my husband) for a double date with my sister-in-law and her new fiancé. My husband was just coming out of the shower, but I was fully dressed (from wig to shoes), waiting for him. As he comes out of the bathroom, he looks at me in amazement and says “WOW!”
Can I tell you that my heart sank. Obviously, not because of what he said. Quite frankly, had he played his cards correctly, he could have been blessed right then and there (wink, wink). My heart sank because I like existing in the shadows – you know being present but not very noticeable (yet here I am writing a blog; God sure does have a funny sense of humor).
I was worried that if my husband was in awe of my outfit, the man I sleep next to every night and has seen me in every possible way, then what would the reaction of others be? I began questioning my outfit choice (is my dress too short, are my heels too high, is the red too much “POP” of color)? Immediately I had to grab hold of those feelings of fear, doubt and insecurity and tell them to go to he🏒 🏒!
And guess what happened that night? As we were waiting for the restaurant to call our names, I notice a woman walking out staring me DOWN! I looked at her, smiled and nodded my head in acknowledgement. She continued walking to her car, which was parked in front of us. Before she gets in, she looks at me and said “I just need to tell you how amazing you look and girl those shoes! I wish I could be that bold.” I said, “thank you, you absolutely can, just do it!”
She smiled and said, “I will. Thank you for being you.” She got in her car and drove off. I’d like to think a pair of cherry red pumps were in her future. But, wait what did she mean when she said, “thank you for being me?” I pondered this thing all throughout dinner. This night was a reminder that being myself, being yourself, will cause some people to stare. You should NOT be alarmed. Authenticity takes courage.
People will often be wowed by your audacity to do and say what they are not willing to risk themselves. So, the next time you‘re walking down the street and notice a person staring at you or doing a double take, hold your head up high and receive the compliment!
Because hunty YOU ARE FIERCE! ❤️
